Scaling and root planing or "deep cleaning" is a procedure that is used to treat patients with periodontal disease or the lose of bone surrounding the teeth. This procedure is generally completed in 1-3 visits based on severity, and involves a below the gum cleaning of teeth. This is usually performed with local anesthesia (“novocaine”) and requires a follow up visit to evaluate the success of the treatment. Patients with periodontal disease generally require more frequent dental cleanings (3-4 months) to ensure stabilization of the disease process.
